DSLR Controller and android tablets

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this software on a variety of tablets. The listed compatible tablets on their site is reasonably limited.

I have a cheap pen do tablet running jellybean and it won't recognise a connection with the camera (canon 1100d) wondering if it's a problem I can solve to should be looking for another tablet.

As an iPad user perhaps I'm missing something. Obvious to. Others

Has the tablet got a suitable network option, ie bluetooth or infrared ?
My Samsung can't do it either as most cameras use infrared and the tablet doesn't.

I run DSLR Controller on my aging Asus TF101 and my HTC OneX. The key requirement to connecting the camera is that the USB port on your Android device can run in host mode.

There is a thread around for DSLR Dashboard which has a wireless option but that still requires a device to connect to your camera.

Can you connect a USBdrive to the tablet and use it as external storage? If you can your device has host mode.

I've run DSLR Controller on a few tablets and phones over the years and I've never found one that didn't work, though I guess I could have just been lucky...

Android has supported host mode for many years so unless your tablet is ancient (by contemporary tech standards) you should be fine.

The thing that separates DSLR Controller on Android from the other options, like Cam Ranger, is that it can control a Canon DSLR directly over a usb cable with the only additional purchase required being a $2 adapter. It's certainly not as revolutionary now days that many new cameras have wifi and can be controlled by any phone/tab but a few years ago when it came out it was amazing :)

Hmmm, didn't know that. I'm going the BYE route now which looks awesome but my Samsung has USB so DSLR control could be useful if I ever go to a dark site. Must investigate further.

Despite being able to mount up a USB thumb drive via the OTG cable I couldn't get the pendo pad to recognise the camera - shame really because the pendo pad seemed a good option being only $29 from Officeworks.

I've opted for an asus memo pad as the dslr controller website lists this as being one that works.

Would still be interested to know if I've missed anything with the pendo. I did also try the diagnostic tool that Chainfire suggsted - that suggested hosting was working but the camera just woyuldn't load up under the controller.

I may have already admitted my extremely limited knowledge of android tablets being an i-human

BYE is awesome too, it's just handy to be able to leave the lappy at home if you can't be bothered :)




Not your fault, it should just work!
From what I can tell the PendoPad uses Android 4.2 so it should definitely work, though this does highlight the problem with buying non-Google hardware as you don't know what weird stuff the manufacturer has done to Android (I'm looking at you Samsung :confused2:)

There appears to be something about "rooting" the tablet but to me it looked rooted already!

Rooting is basically just giving you full access to the files on the device, kinda like a root or administrator account on Windows/*nix/ OSX, and kinda like jailbreaking an iDevice though nowhere near as difficult or discouraged.

I really didn't think that was necessary these days for something like DSLR Controller but I guess it is on a PendoPad!

Personally if it was my PendoPad I would root it and chuck Cyanogenmod or something on it but that's a fair bit of hassle if it's your first time doing it.

A couple of good rules when playing with rooting/custom ROMs are:
- make sure you know what exact device you have, double check model numbers etc. There are often different ROMs for say a WiFi version of a tablet and a WiFi+4G version.
- Read through all the instructions first and make sure you understand everything, and have everything you need, before you start.

Personally I've never had an unfixable problem when rooting or installing a custom ROM, even when things appeared to have gone wrong, but you still need to be careful. A cheap PendoPad is probably the best place to start as worst case you're only out ~$30.

We have got a TP-link MR-3040 wifi routers and installed the custom firmware on it so it will work on iPad ,Android,pc,Mac ,or Linux.

They work well and on the iPad and Android we have jpg and raw pics coming to them for viewing and can save them to the iPad or android change focus and have 5 flashes working in sync I hit capture and within a few seconds I can see the pic.

We use a canon 5D mark 2 and it works great with the App called QDSLdashboard.


With the canon 70 d wifi is built into it so you don't need a tplink MR-3040 wifi router.

thanks Cathy - I have one of those routers coming. I guess I was looking to have the best of both worlds - wireless for convenience and wired for stability and speed. I certainly have a look at the dashboard too.
