What's the worst Sci-Fi movie you've seen?

This is my offering.

Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet.
Starring Basil Rathbone.

I found this DVD at the LifeLine Bookfest for 50c. I now think that I paid too much for it.
It's a hybrid Russian/US movie spliced/stapled together in 1965. I can put up with dodgy sets and costumes so long as there is a half decent storyline, this doesn't have one. It's crap through and through, boring and slow.
This fella did a good writeup about it, saves me hurting my head thinking about this stupid flick.

I have a 50 movie pack - 12 disks, double sided dual layered DVD's - that I bought on ebay a while ago. Voyage to the prehistoric planet is one of them I think, they are ALL on par with each other.

One of them, can't remember which right now, is SO cheap and nasty that they didn't have money for the evil alien Overlord's costume .. or his headquarters .... so they dressed him a gorilla suit but put a cheapo "space helmet" on the top and called him a robot. I kid you not! His lair is a "narrow" vertical workstation type affair in the mouth of a dry and dusty cave. World domination here we come!

Don't get me wrong, I knew what I was buying when I got these, as nasty as they are I really enjoy some of these old crappy B&W sci fi horrors.

I could tell you about another movie in this pack with the monster that has ping pong balls for eyes, but I think you get the picture.

;)

Hi Guys
I think Plan 9 from outer space ( made by Ed Wood ) is hard to beat but that movie that had a guy in a gorilla suit and diving helmet (which is called Robot Monsters ) is a classic too .
Hard to beleive these people were serious when they made these movies and teenagers paid money to go see them in the sixties , of couse kids have much better taste now;)

Plan 9, people still pay money to see it now, I bought the dvd a few months ago for 9.95 worth ever cent.
For a film made in the late 50s I think its underated, any film that gets mentioned on Sienfeld (The Hot Coffee) and is available on DVD has survived the test of time better than a lot of others. I give it 3 stars.

Could bring it to Lostock to raise money, people have to pay not to watch it.

Darkstar is very memorable for me. It is either very bad or very good depending on your state of intoxication - hippies in a spaceship flying around the galaxy destroying stars and being hunted by a predator that greatly resembles a beach ball.

"Xtro" is one to miss, billed as "Not all ET's are friendly" Science fiction/Horror and pretty lacking in both. It's the usual story, alien comes to Earth, shapeshifts and eats people. There lots of screaming and blood to make up for the lack of everything else.

cheers

LOL!! One of Dan O'Bannon's great movies! I loved Dark Star.

Also one of John Carpenter's first....... :)

Interesting situation with this one. As a kid, I was entralled and loved the original series back in the 60's. I'm not sure why, but when I went to see the movie as an adult decades later I somehow assumed that the subject matter would have grown up with me and the movie would appeal to me as I am now. Of course, I was entirely wrong, as the movie was still designed to appeal to kids. My silly assumption - not the producer's.

'Them'

It is about giant ants that take over the world, but obviously all the ants get killed by the one man with the solution to rid the world of these badly filmed and super-imposed creatures. Oh, and he gets the girl too (of course)

That one just reminded me of one Ken. (Must have been subconsciously blocking it). My daughter used to love this movie, and I hated it with a passion. Starring Geena Davis, Jeff Goldbloom and Jim Carey. "Earth Girls are Easy" It's probably the only thing my ex and I ever agreed on.

Dark Star rocks!! Classic Carpenter. The enthusiastic argumentative talking bombs, the "spaced out" dude in his bubble under the stars, the whole story and the execution are just hilarious. Anyone else spot the very effective use of muffin tins on the spacesuit costumes?

Really lame but watchable-:
The original Little Shop of Horrors, Jack Nicholson had his screen debut in it.
The Day of the Triffids, it doesn't scare me like it used to when I was a kid.

Did any of you see the movie "Stone" when it first came out?
I thought this was the best movie ever at the time. Kids would turn up at the theatre carrying motor bike helmets and leather jackets trying to look tough.
We made the mistake of hiring the DVD a while ago. What a piece of crap! What was I thinking at the time?

Ric
13-10-2006, 07:02 PM
I have the anniversary edition of "Stone", yes it's dated but still a classic.
I remember the all the kids with their helmets as well but I did have a Kawasaki 900 with 4 into 1 pipes out the front to ride off on, made you feel a million dollars.

great stuff

Anybody remember 'Monolith monsters'? similar plot sort of to the day of the triffids. Worst scifi ever for my money was, was, was, it was that bad I've blanked it out of my mind! It was a recent remake of journey to the center of the Earth. Might have been called 'core' or something similar. Given the state of the art special effects and general film making art these days, this film would even insult the intellect of a pot of stewed cabbage.:screwy:

First season of Lost In Space was great in b/w

Them, has better acting than most Australian movies even with the "super-imposed creatures" IMDB gives it 7.3

Monolith Monsters was good enough for my wife wanted imported from the States at the time on VHS NTSC

Dark Star is a great comedy

So my vote also goes to Independence Day

Cheers Mark

Absolutely ridiculous movie!

Mind you, even the worst sci fi movies can be absurdly entertaining.

The Phantom Menace - absolutely the most disappointing movie I've ever seen, of any genre.

Second worst goes to Attack of the Clones - one of the few movies I've switched off in the middle.

Third worst: Revenge of the Sith. Oh wait, I didn't even bother to watch that one.

I'm with you Rob, 2012 was the worst waste of my time. Nobody is that lucky to escape in the "nick of time" so many times in a movie. Didn't see the end...went and asked for my money back....didn't get it!

 Yea I used to ride a Norton Commando 750 back then ( would still have it today if some low life did not steal it ! ) but I cringed when the Kwaka 900 wasted it and stone crashed his Norton on the corner ,,, OUCH !
in reality the Norton would have eaten the Kawasiki on that road .
Dated but a classic ,
ps. I still cringe !

Always get me how these aliens travel all this way have way cool tech and we end up defeating them

I don't think so,

alas what they class as sci-fi has little science in it

My top 5 worst movies of recent times (meaning that it doesn't include the early sci-fi like "It Came From Outer Space" which I admit creeped me out at the time :eyepop:: I was only about 4 when I first saw it.)

1. Eagle Eye
2. I Am Legend
3. Armageddon
4. Waterworld
5. Robocop (all 3) :P

Gee Trevor, I wonder why you say Flesh Gordon is so bad:

 Sounds like highly Intellectual Drama to me :P

But I have to REALLY disagree with 'Last Starfighter'. That was my favourite Sci-Fi movie!
Followed by 'Flight of the Navigator'!
:D

Doug
24-11-2011, 12:24 PM
I liked the last star fighter too. DARYL was a nice tale as well.
The all time worst sci/fi/disaster film would have to be 'The Core'
If it had been meant to be a spoof on a mining company gone crazy, ok, but as serious Sci/Fi I'd rate it as none out of 100

Stardrifter_WA
24-11-2011, 04:43 PM
Only watched about 1/2 hr of The Core and have to agree with you Doug, it was terrible. I couldn't finish watching it.

Event Horizon and Dune (loved the books).

Just can't split them

Stardrifter_WA

Loved Event Horizon. It is interesting how peoples opinions differ. It raises the question "what does one want or expect from a sci-fi movie

TrevorW
24-11-2011, 07:37 PM
I'd second "Event Horizon" as being good sci-fi horror

"Dune" -De Laurentis should be shot for what they did

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" is generally rated as the worst movie of all time, it's so bad it's very entertaining.
For my money, "Mission to Mars" starring Tim Robbins and Gary Sinise, was a steaming curl. It's riddled with all sorts of scientific howlers from astronauts adrift in space who suddenly come to a halt to allow a crappily-plotted rescue attempt to be written into the script; a marooned astronaut living in a unit on Mars with tomato plants and a door that can apparently be left open without any loss of pressure in his dwelling; and aliens who have built a den in the "Face of Mars" landscape feature. Considering the cast, and the director Brian de Palma, you'd have thought they'd at least try and get a few things realistic. Obviously they considered the average filmgoer wouldn't be bothered by a few little discrepancies.

Stardrifter_WA
24-11-2011, 08:10 PM
Lets face it Trevor, the "average" filmgoer wouldn't probably know these things anyway. As informed parties, we notice these discrepancies. :eyepop: However, I am sure the makers of these films don't really take this into account. This is why, when I watch sci-fi, I leave my brain at the door and just enjoy the ride, however good or bad it is. After all, it is meant to be entertainment, not documentary :D

Independence Day. That bit where is plugs his laptop into the alien craft and downloads the virus just kills me!

And everything else made since about 1990. Perhaps we need two threads: worse pre-1990 and post-1990?

Sure we cringe, but we can be smug in the knowledge that we know how things should really be, if it was real life..

Mixed feelings about the movies listed here. Maybe major disappointments rather than worst sci-fi movie ever made :D. I have one that comes to mind that everybody seem to have forgotten, wait let me try to remember what it was, hmmm, ok, I remember now, "Wing Commander - The Movie" the one with Freddie Prinze Jr. Went to see it and I didn't finish the movie, walked out in the middle of it.

H.G. Wells - First Men in the Moon (1964 film) - what a shocker, but loved every minute of it as a kid.

The first explorers (United Nations) land on the moon in the 1960s only to discover a British flag on the surface! Seems the Brits had already landed on the moon in the 1890s - classic! Love the propulsion system of the spacecraft - anti gravity paint!

For me, it has to be Dune.
I remember seeing it when it first came out, and leaving the cinema wondering what had just happened.
I tried watching it again recently, thinking my matured outlook would make it more enjoyable. How wrong I was. I just wanted it to end.
I had to apologise to my daughter for making her watch it with me.
