Running your astro-computer via WiFi

Hi all,

I currently connect to my MeLe astro computer using WiFi and Remote Desktop Connection from my desktop PC. The process works well, but its noticeably laggy compared to the direct output from the MeLe.

Part of the reason for the lag is likely that I'm running the connection over a 2.4Ghz network using older modem/extender technology. This week I will be upgrading my modem and extender to WiFi 6 technology, which will support 5Ghz operation and an improved bandwidth protocol.

Has anyone been through the same process as me, if so, did you notice much of a difference in responsiveness after you upgraded your technology? Obviously the ultimate goal would be to tether via Ethernet/Fibre, but that's not really an option for me currently.

I have added an wifi access point outside where the MeLE connects to.
Notice no lag.
Before, it wasdropping out regularly as the double gazed door/windows were blocking the signal from the access point inside the house.

Jarrod and Wilco, I am thinking of getting a MeLe. Which model do you recommend as there seem to be a few available, Rob.

@Wilsil - I am also putting a WiFi extender outside (its coming in the post). I should have WiFi 6 connectivity between all components then. Fingers crossed its nice and smooth.

@Cyberman - I use the Mele quieter3c, performance is surprisingly good for a small package.

Hi Jarrod. I'm using a mele quieter 2 on my rig. think your issue is more likely with range/signal dropoff. even a 2.4ghz should be well sufficient to maintain a remote desktop session. i just use a $50 wall plug-in wifi extender in a power point as close to the backyard as i can, and can use it in either 2.4 or 5ghz mode with no worries.

I just purchased a mele as I wanted to try out other alternatives to my existing asiair. Currently my setup is a bit scuffed with multiple wifi extenders which connect to the asiair.

Have you been able to test using the mele as a hotspot similar to the asiair does by chance? Theres a few solutions but im also not sure what is ideal. The easiest implementation that doesnt require change is to connect the mele to my existing array of extenders and just hope rdp works quickly enough.

Yes, you can configure the Mele to be a hotspot and also connect the another wifi network, same as the asiair. I setup the hotspot feature only as a fallback in case I have connection issues with my home network. I've not needed to use it so far.

While 5GHz wifi is faster the speed drops off quickly with distance. Try to get an access point as close as possible to your observing location for best results.

Also tried TP-link (https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-av600-nano-powerline-adaptor-starter-kit-tl-pa411kit-tptlpa411) solution, works much faster.
