Hi All

I've just noticed that a new film by Ron Howard called "In the Shadow of the Moon" - presumably coming out on 7th September 2007 in the States.

The advertising for this describes this documentary movie as;

"Between 1968 and 1972, nine American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon, and 12 men walked upon its surface. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON brings together for the first, and possibly the last, time surviving crew members from every single Apollo mission that flew to the Moon along with visually stunning archival material re-mastered from the original NASA film footage. The result is an intimate epic that vividly communicates the daring, the danger, the pride, and the promise of this extraordinary era in history when the whole world literally looked up at America."

A nice trailer Quicktime download is available at;

A High-Definition version (720p and 1080p) appears at;
http://www.apple.com/trailers/thinkfilm/intheshadowofthemoon/hd/

[I just downloaded the 154 Mb - 1080p version and was completely blown away...]

What are the chances of seeing this in an Australian cinema?

Would you think it be possible to get this as a "special screening" - if the movie is not distributed here in Australia?

If not.... can't wait for the DVD!

NOTE:
The other Apollo film, "For All Mankind" (1989) was also fantastically brilliant. This "Academy Award Best Documentary" was directed by Al Reinert and is basically a movie soundtrack (produced by Brian Eno) set to film and images of all the Apollo moon missions. Several clips of the whole movie can be found at; (This is the whole YouTube version of the movie). The best section of all is Part 4. Just brilliant - must see!!!!

See : http://www.videosift.com/video/For-All-Mankind-Apollo-Documentary-Brian-Eno-Score

(This site is best to use, as you don't have to sort through You-Tube for the individual parts.)

Other written information about this 1989 film can be found at;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_All_Mankind

Purchasing of this wonderful movie is only Region 1 [:mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:] , and none is available in Australia.

The Eno's ambient-style music is available in Australia, and is entitled "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtrack." This is is a great observing CD, which has the near-perfect tracks of "An Ending/ Descent and the very eerie "Under Stars II."

(It can be purchased through iTunes for $17.99, though I saw a "Remastered copy" at Sanity for $15 bucks.)

"In the Shadow of the Moon" looks awesome, I'd definitely buy that when it comes out on DVD.
What an emotional inspiring movie it would be.

Hi :hi: All (again),

Did anyone download the "For All Mankind" vid? I just looked at the first part again, and realised I had never heard the whole John Kennedy "Moon" speech on going to the Moon. I think I may have given the wrong impression here, as the vid has lots of talking between the astronauts and mission control + brilliant images and NASA film clips I haven't seen before.

The YouTube Web address is;

(which also will have the other parts in the "related" window on that page)

Ving,
Brian Eno - how did he ruin it? I though it suitable as it reminds me of the cold and emptiness of space...

:) Some Good News.

Apparently the movie "In the Shadow of the Moon" will be released on 7th February 2008, presumably for general theatrical release
(See; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0925248/ )
I do hope this comes true, as this would be great news to see Apollo footage on the big screen!

Note: I also had also hoped that a November theatrical release of "Blade Runner : The Final Cut" would be shown in Australia. This is not to be. However, at least the 5-disc "Ultimate Collectors Edition" DVD version will be released on 5th December. I have already pre-purchased the this for $88 bucks. Can't Wait.

Quotes:

Sushi Master : He say you Bladddee wrunner! (with Poor Japanese Accent)
Deckard : Tell him I'm eating.

and

Roy "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die."
Classic! :cheers:

Flicking through the channels on demand on the Virgin Atlantic flight back to Oz, there it was - "In the Shadow of the Moon".

Watched it once - was blown away. So watched it all the way through again! Apart from footage of Kennedy, Cronkite and a few others, it's entirely Apollo astronauts describing their participation in the program from beginning to end. Tremendous footage - all that great stuff you have seen clips of - takeoff, stage separation, lunar module detach and descent and ascent. Footage of Neil Armstrong ejecting from an rapidly going out of control "flying bedstead". Commentary by the astronauts - how much was carefully planned and executed, how much was unexpected and "seat of the pants". Their first views of Earth hanging in space, of the Moon up close. The deaths of Apollo 1 crew - Grissom, White and Chaffee.

Great job by Ron Howard.

Can't wait... read a review around October last year and found out the release date for Australia. Day before my birthday... hint, hint, dear.
