I've have the old 2g version i bought from the states for almost 3 years so i'm planning to get the 4g when it comes out. I'm definitely looking forward to getting it but there's nothing really that ground breaking about it this time around, IMHO. I like the idea of the upgraded screen, i saw a friend's HD2 and the resolution was noticeably nicer, so better res on the 4g will be nice. I also really like the idea of glass on the front and back! The back of my phone is so scratched up, it looks really shabby! It'll be nice to stick a screen protector to both sides to keep it nice and shiny.

Looks pretty good but I'll wait another year when the contract ends on my current model, wouldn't be surprised if there's another update then :)

I thought the iPhone 3G was a sleek, stylist, do-all phone. Now just look at ththe new version!!! :eyepop:I like the look of it. Sounds exciting. Many people are critical of Apple for various reasons, but you cannot fault their drive to experiment and push new boundaries. I have been a dedicated Nokia mobile phone user since the early 1990's but once I switched to the iPhone 3GS, there is no turning back. You watch all the iPhone clones take off now.
(And soon to be an iMac convert).
I just got a new 3GS phone 2 weeks ago... but my work provided it so I haven't paid anything :) I'll be looking forward to iOS 4.0.

I must say this is good timing for me. I've just been looking into finally jumping on the Iphone bandwagon, and buying a 16GB 3GS. With the Iphone 4 announcement, it's already dropped from $879 to $799. And the 32GB version is now down to $879.
With that in mind, I think I'll still go ahead with the 3GS. For me, the extra features it has over the 3GS isn't compelling enough for me to spend an extra couple of hundred or so (whatever the price will be) for it.
Higher resolution screen? *shrugs* the 3GS looks good to me.
Video calls? *shrugs* I hate webcams, so it's not something I want on a phone.
Multitasking? *shrugs* I've got a computer for that.
Sexier design? *shrugs* it's a phone. :)
One more reason to look forward to tax time......
You'll want it pretty quickly once you start playing with the thing.
It's the single most screamed after improvement from iPhone owners and Apple listened.
Best of all, you can have that on the 3GS, iOS4 should be available to download a couple of days before the iPhone4 release date.
I'm with Adam and Hummer, another year(and a bit more) before I can upgrade... but guys, we still get to play with OS4 ;)

Can't wait for iOS 4, but has anyone else seen the worldwide developer conference coverage, and in particular the "Apple Hyperwall"? Talk about seeing money being made in real time...

The 2010 Keynote: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1006ad9g4hjk/event/index.html
2 hours long, but there are some incredible developments in iOS4 to see. iMovie editing in 720HD right on the device - amazing.

Interesting marketing by Apple. This was a lead item on the SMH website yesterday. I just don't see why a new model of a mobile phone is newsworthy. A new model of a car doesn't get the same coverage. It's not as if it is a new discovery or something. It's just an upgrade of an existing thing ie a mobile phone.:zzz2:

Terry,
It's because it's a popular device which people love to use.
It's also the reason why there are articles on F*c*b**k and Tw*tt*r on news web sites on a daily basis.

Topic aside, - aren't we allowed to say Facebook and Twitter?

There are lots of consumer items that are popular and people love to use but just because a newer version of something is released doesn't make it very newsworthy. I think it is called "advertising".
Articles on Fbook or Twit ter can also be called "advertising"

Hi All,
I just ...
... can't get excited by a phone, sorry. Any phone. Call me a luddite if you will (and I know you will).
Actually, I've been thinking about replacing my six year-old Nokia lately, mainly because the "8" key won't work most of the time. It is my second mobile phone in fourteen years. When not in use, it sits in my pocket and no-one can see whether it is stylish or not.
I use it to ... make phone calls.
Best,
Les D
I used to use my phone just to make calls too, then I needed a new phone when the old one went car surfing(left it on the roof).
Actually, I went about 4 or 6 months without a mobile at all after that, until I was told by work that, as a manager, I MUST get one.(plenty of emphasis on that, I got the hint)
Now I check IceInSpace in my lunch break, check if I've been outbid on ebay, do my banking, check my emails, make music, listen to music, check the weather forecast, leave myself written notes and voice memo's, use the scientific calculator(for work), check where the cheapest petrol is, read a free e-book.... all from my pocket.
And yes I do all of those things regularly.
I've even had customers email me schematic diagrams in PDF format so I can get all the electronic components ready for them to pick up. Saves them time and saves me rushing around in the store while they are standing there waiting.
I don't NEED to do those things, but it's sure nice ;)

Simon,
These things have been mentioned in pretty much every iPhone thread that's come up. I've stopped explaining myself. : )

So I guess people will now carry around an IPod, Iphone and Ipad?
Apple could show real innovation and make one device that can replace the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Maybe even make the phone dockable with the pad, so the pad can have some features of the phone, like a camera, LED flashlight and motion sensing etc.
Duc, the iPhone already has the iPod in it.
The iPad with 3G is realy an iPad+iPhone+iPod
Steffen

Yes, all iPhones and iPads include an iPod app (and a nice one at that). However, the iPad doesn't have a phone app (like the iPhone), only VoIP calls are possible, AFAICT.
Hence, it's down to iPhone vs iPad vs both :)
Cheers
Steffen.
Steffen, iPad has 3g phone as option.
Steffen
10-06-2010, 06:32 PM
Simon,
it has 3G as an option but that's for data, not for voice. Out of the box you can't make phone calls with an iPad. I'm sure some VoIP apps will fill that void and enable "sort of phone" functionality on the iPad.
Cheers
Steffen.

Nice pice of gear. My contract has run out so perfect timing as my old iphone has copped a hammering.
Quick Q, is anyone concerned with the wifi/bluetooth etc antenna being exposed and you physically touch it with your fingers when the phone is being used. My understanding (plus all the warnings on my previous phones re not to touch the antenna) is that the antenna radiation pattern is altered if you touch the antenna and that can cause the phone to go to max output power (2W in this case)
Any one worried about getting your head fried off?
Cheers
Mike
Ah ok, that makes sense.
I thought it would look a tad odd to hold an iPad up to ones ear!
Tho I thought maybe it worked with a Bluetooth headset.
No phone option... Bit of a bummer.

I have used my iPhone so much the home key doesn't work everytime ,sometimes have to hit the key a few times to get it to work and the case is cracked and pieces are ready to fall out. I went to Telstra today to look at the 3GS thinking I might buy one out right @ $799 (US price $99) for the 16gb version. Asked about the 4G and was told the price is expected to be $1300+ for the 16gb version (US price $299) might be worthwhile mailordering one from the states.

Those US prices include a phone plan, so are not comparable to outright purchase.
Cheers
Stuart
LOL my home button didn't work everytime either, but thats 'coz I spilled bourbon and coke on it the first day I got it, probably didn't help much ;)
Works fine now.
Arent the US prices linked to 2year AT&T plans?
EDIT: Erp... Stuart posted while I was single-finger typing(and eating)

Teach me to read the fine print. Yes AT&T contract required. But still a huge price difference.

Not that big - they're paying $100/month aren't they? Over 24 months that's $2400 + the $299!
Wow, thats a Hellstra-style contract.
When I was shopping around for the 3GS the plans were much the same, 'till I found one with the 'magic number', about half the price... $1416 over the 24 months. ($49plan +$10phone)

Les, you're my hero. They are just phones, but wow, are they popular ... at least on Melbourne trains. I was reading a book next to a lady with one and she kept lifting it up and flicking it.... damned distracting. I eventually had to see if she was okay (a seizure perhaps...?) and realised she was using some sort of fishing app. Hey, if $800 plus contracts lets you fish on a train... more power to you :)
:thumbsup: kool i sooo want one now, im due for a new phone.
Does this mean the prices will finally come down :)

Sounds like a Wii remote. Might need some sort of wrist strap, otherwise the phone could accidently be thrown. :)

Hi Jen,
outright purchase prices will be set by Apple (probably some time in July) and are not likely to change until the next model comes out (probably mid 2011).
The price mentioned by the Telstra shop assistant doesn't sound believable to me, I suspect the prices will be very close to the current 3GS prices. The 3GS was introduced in July 2009 when the pacific peso was around the US$0.80 mark, just like it is now. However, nobody (incl. mobile carriers) will know until Apple Australia make their intentions known.
Whatever sort of deals mobile carriers will offer in conjunction with a plan is completely up to them. Those offers have to be looked at and compared when they are published.
Cheers
Steffen.

Been there done that.
I have bowling and fishing apps. Have lost the phone due to "the flick" a few times.
Adrian
Ah haha.
I was reading the above posts and a thought struck me(it drew blood too).... Apple haven't released a gaming console to try take the Wii/Playstation/XBox market.
Well, they will be.... get ready for the iBox!
