Anyone knows where I can get bird spikes in Sydney? Would Bunnings carry that stuff? I'm trying to keep the crowd off my TV antenna. Is there a better solution? Would the spikes interfer with the TV signal? So many questions... :P Time to get a slug gun? Thanks for any pointers.

If it's metal (the spikes), then yes. You changing the design parameters of the antenna.
Have a cat permanently stationed on the roof....

Makes sense. Plastic spikes it is then. Funny enough when I had my cat around I didn't have this problem.

Cable ties seem to work on bike helmets - might work on the antenna also?

Get up there Marc and put Big cable ties with the tails towards the sky up there.
There cheap enough.
I see the push bike riders put them on there helmets with the tails up when the maggies swoop them so it should not interfere with rf signals

We have a little bit of success with old CD's and DVD's but don't hang them too close to the active elements else it may spoil your reception a little.
The disks spin and float around in the wind and make flashes which does tend to frighten the birds away.

Or a rubber snake hanging off it by elastics. Don't know for sure if it works, just an idea.

That works at the house at Wiruna. A couple of time somebody (I won't name him here :P) left a snake inside hanging off the front door for the first to come in. Nearly s||t myself last time.

Marc,
I have the AVIPOINT P20 stainless steel spikes from these guys (http://www.pestawayaust.com.au/spikes.html) on the cross beam of the pergola out the back. 100% effective against Indian flying rats and pigeons.
The polycarb ones would suit you for the TV antenna.

Bunnings certainly carry the plastic spikes in the garden section, not sure about the wire ones.
They shouldn't be hard to get, a local, non Bunnings hardware store, stocks them.
I used to get pigeons roosting on some unused power conduit but had the wire spikes installed and no problems since

They use cable ties on solar panels to keep birds off. Just get the long thick ones.

Thanks guys. Yeah I had a browse at this website. I'll get some of the stuff for the veranda beams. The birds don't like to get wet so with all the rain we're getting they come and perch under it. For the antenna as I need something pretty light I'll try the cable ties first. There are a couple of cockatoos who did a bang up job on my neighbourg's antenna so that's the main worry. They're heavier birds.
We have a life size plastic Owl which seems to work quite well in keeping the birds out of the vege garden.
Cheers

Just finished putting cable ties all over it. Looks like a fern/palm tree. Will see how that goes then go to plan B if needed. Time will tell. Might be a combination of things to get the end result. I thought about putting one of those kid's shinny wind mill on top of the pole too. That'd scared the hell out of them no? Anything with a propeller or something moving I thought. But then again they don't seem to be phased by the near wheely exhaust fan.
Saw a website that sells those falcon shapes kites :) ...
Your antenna must look like a Cactus now.
It's probably a good conversation piece now for all the neighbours.

It looks furry ... seems to work so far. They're all over the other antennas checking mine out from a distance. Hopefully they don't figure it out. If that doesn't work I'm going to stick one of those flashy kid's wind mill. That'll be a topic of conversation for sure in the neighbourhood.

Hi Mark, If its pigeons, starlings or blackbirds go for the slug gun and get rid of some ferals, otherwise there's simple fix. Get a statue of a peregrine falcon and sit it at the base of the antenna. You wont see anything near it again...:)

Well believe it or not the cable ties business was simple enough and did the job. No birds so far. Sure the antenna looks like a black fern but the elements that were bent and that I starightened up are still all intact and no birds in sight still. Touch wood. :P

I'm worried that those SS spikes would affect the TV signal if fitted on an antenna. Under the veranda I sorted it out by running fishlines in little eyelets. It's not intrusive and doesn't attract cobwebs like this spikes would. I haven't had a bird in months under there and with the weather they would be all under here if I hadn't done it. But now they've found the neighbourghs awning more attractive.
