Zeta Ophiuchi

Hi everyone,

Here is Zeta Ophiuchi, a so-called ‘runaway star’, ejected from its place of birth and travelling through space at high velocity (relative to its surroundings), in this case creating a distinctive ‘bow shock’.

In this HOO image we can see the rather nice donation of oxygen and hydrogen in the bow-shock area surrounded by a sea of hydrogen-rich clouds which form part of the SH2-27 nebula. This is a very luminous star and produces some pretty wild halos, even with 3nm narrowband filters -mostly in oxygen, as you would expect, but also in hydrogen too! Very difficult to remove these in post-processing so I have left them in. Fortunately, I think that they do add to the ‘drama of the scene’.

This represents 16hrs of Hydrogen and 10 hrs of Oxygen data plus a tiny bit extra for RGB stars. Processed in APP and Photoshop with Blur Exterminator used only to reduce the RGB stars by 25%. Delta Rho 350 scope from Melbourne’s outer reaches….

thanks for looking

That's brilliant. Both the image and the fact we have a 'rogue' star blasting through space.

Beautiful image. And I'm jealous of your delta rho. Phenomenal scope. Do you have issues at 3nm narrowband with such fast optics?

I'm using Baader high speed filters which are optimised for f3 so not really an issue on terms of transmission. The major issue with the DR350 is, however, tilt. The critical focus zone is only 12 microns so pretty much every time I move the rotator then I have to dial the tilt correction back in.

I can do it reasonably quickly now after quite a few initial teething troubles but I really don't know how you would ever deal with this on a remote installation, for example. Its a pretty 'high maintenance' bit of kit

Up until now, I've only seen professional imagery of the Zeta Ophiuchi bow shock.

You've handled this extremely well.

Ditto with well deserved praise. Nice
