Milkyway Montage

Finaly finished my milkyway Ha Pano. Still a bit noisy and I'll probably need more data but considering the weather doesn't look like it's going to cooperate and the moon's up it'll have to wait.

Meanwhile I located most of the DSOs I shot over the years and did a little montage as a reference map.

The big file is here (5.4MB) 6834x2848 px
Smaller one here (1.2MB) 3000x1250 px

Enjoy the pano. There's a bit of everything in it.

Hi Marc,

Looks amazing..you're an artist as well!

I get to see where all the DSOs are in relation to each other.

Thanks.

Ross.

Pro-Quality!

A good way to view a variety of objects and their relative position to each other.

Definitely poster material.

Thanks Trev. I don't think it's print material though (yet).

Thanks Alex. Will take a raincheck on that. Re-shoot some parts, smooth the data, tidy it up and I'll make it available via FTP somewhere. Maybe RAR it. I think the TIFF is a bit over 100MB.

Thanks mate. Yeah it's a good reference to see the positions, relative brightness and how it all fits together. All of a sudden the milkyway doesn't look that big.

Thanks for looking Rick. As I told Alex I'll make the final available for people who want to print it out. No worries.

Very nice Marc. That pretty well covers it. If I can make on sugestion. The bottom display box would look better being flat on the bottom not skewed to the side.
Otherwise brilliant work.

Thanks Doug. Too kind TBH there are a lot of things that I'm not happy with in this picture considering the amount of time I took to get the data. Bit of frustration with not being able to register the stacks properly and use all the subs I have. At 35mm I found it a real challenge to get CCDIS or even registar to do anything remotely acceptable with star patterns matching. I got a 200mm lens which I'm going to use to get a better image scale and reshoot the sub panels and use this one as a reference scaffold.

Yeah I get what you say about the M16/17 sideways. I only did that so the zoom lines don't intersect the sides of the two other pics, top and bottom, and also tried to match their orientation in the scaffold. Obviously I didn't do a very good job at it.

Ultimately I will have this totally interactive so when you rollover the milkyway the side tiles update with a link to the area you hover on. First I need a decent milkyway that I don't have to hide behind big panels.
